ASC Leadership Training Camp Academic Year 09/10
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Two weeks zoomed by after the Semestral Examinations and the Applied Science Studies Club executed their 4th Project for the year; the ASC Leadership Training Camp AY09/10. The project organized by Main Committee members Amjad Adabi, Aw Kuan Hon & Md Qhairil saw a total of 51 participants taking part and vying for the 40 exclusive spots to serve the Applied Science School as a Sub Committee member. This year's LTC was a rousing success with an overall 97.5% positive response by the participants. So sit back, relax and read on as we delve into the details of th 2D1N event.
But first, a big Congratulations with Special Mention for the outstanding performance by the following participants in order of merit.

Amanda Tang from Perce
Siti Khadijah from Panthers
Vanessa Yong from Panthers
This year's ASC Leadership Training Camp AY 09/10 saw a healthy participant turnout of 51 throughout the 2D1N programme starting on the 9th of September. With Sub-Committee selection being the aim of the camp with the promotion of bonding among the future Sub Committee Members, this year's camp was structured specifically to be a complete package of fun and games with Leadership, Teamwork and Character Development being the foundations of the programme.
Not only was the camp beneficial to the participants but organizers of the camp were able to simulate the running of a camp which would be similar to their future sister projects; Orientation Leadership Training Camp 10/11 & Week 0 Orientation.
Behind the scenes, Facilitators were issued a participant assessment sheet which was carefully crafted with a concrete scoring system to select the best 40 participants among them. The assessment criteria required continuous monitoring of the potential Sub Commitee Member throughout the whole course of the camp, right from the Ice Breakers all the way to the personal interactions. The assessment criteria is of course a secret ;).
With that much said in words took quite a proportion of this entry and as pictures paint thousands of words, the pictures will do the talking.
(Disclaimer: The captions in the following series of pictures are in no way relevant or pertinent to the represented pic and are purely fallacious and exaggerated depictions and descriptions of actual events. Yes, that means the captions are for fun and untrue)

Repentant, Zheng Yee learns the importance of bathing before attending camps as he gets attacked by lice.

Syimir and gang learn the value of unity as they dress and groom to look alike in the spirit of teamwork.

AS medics Rongjie, Zul and Sze Jie are trained in close combat to prepare for any situation be it medical emergencies or peace-keeping.

Facilitator Fariza gets a rare chance to experience how being tall feels like with the help of Facilitator Dineesha.
Roslee decides to experience hardship by being blindfolded, left to beg and wander aimlessly around school.
Camp Commandant Qai experienced extreme weight loss and accelerated ageing throughout the camp and has recently recovered from the trauma.
Joey, Vanessa & Khadijah learn to use improvised sign language as they learn to "MAKE IT REAL" for an egg.
Producing protection for eggs while being blindfolded and verbally instructed by quieter members who in turn receive signed-language instructions from louder members is an experience unique to ASC LTC AY09/10.
Wei Zhi demonstrates life lessons learned in the army as his team builds a parachute for their fragile egg.
Team Mungens try desperately to defend their fallen mummy while trying to maintain their glamour.
Later that night, participants reported the presence of a bright yellow UFO. Without hesitation, Syimir and Li Hwa gave chase to investigate on the matter and eventually came into contact with an alien in a blue T-shirt who could move faster than the speed of light.
The moment the clock struck Midnight, Dennis celebrated his 10th Birthday in style as styrofoam cakes grew in popularity as of early 2009.
For a brief moment in time, participants lost control of their arms and were forced to continue with the games using what little control was left of their remaining limbs.
Xin Yi expertly demonstrates how different types of flour can be identified by the meer touch of the index finger, even without looking.
Participants experience the joys of male bonding sessions in the presence of flour.
In the spirit of their team name, Team Mungens decide to conduct a discussion on how yellow water bottles could enhance unity among team members.
Camp Commandant Qai remains startled as one of his crazy fans start singing to him in Mandarin while Camp Organizer Amjad looks on in envy.
Roslee and partner struts down the runway in fashion label ALP's 2009 Summer-Spring collection.
Li Hwa enjoys a quick baby nap as her teammates happily transports her through the spiderweb of Doom.
Typically there's nothing to be said about this picture as it speaks for itself. The truth is I've got nothing to say save for the fact that it was chosen because I think it looks cool!
Of giant Mascaras among other things, Vanessa demonstrates the dynamics of improvisation with a Tiki Torch.
Ending the camp with a bang, Grace demonstrates her "karaoke pose" while giving the closing speech.
Camp Organizers Qai and Amjad compliment each other and discuss the finer points of their beautiful white polo tees while Kuan Hon realizes that hanging a pen around his neck may make him the victim of marginalization by his fellow Camp Organizers.
No Camp is complete without a picture of all the participants struggling to keep a smile on their face at the end of the camp despite all the aches they feel all over their bodies.
As a final word, Camp Organizers Amjad, Kuan Hon & Qai would like to thank all Facilitators, Loggers & Helpers (including photographer) for making the camp a success as well as the participants who went through the camp and made it a success!

National Launch of Briskwalking Clubs
Monday, September 28, 2009
Hey fellow main and sub comms! Firstly a very very very huge, gigantic, enormous, massive and tremendous thank you for all of your help! Candy, Xinyi and myself really appreciated every single one of your help.
It was a tough event for us to coordinate, I know it's rather ridiculous and tiring at some point of the event but nevertheless thank you all for your unconditional love and kind understanding.
To my dear main comms, thank you so much for willingly accepting the fact that we got to transport all the breakfast packs down to level one by dawn. Thank you all for the determination shown and even setting a target of transporting all of them down before 4.30am, all 10,500. And we really did! You guys really took off the loads of troubles and worries bearing on 3 of our shoulders.
To my dear sub comms, you have no idea how touched I was when I saw so many of you people streaming out of the auditorium wanting to help us while I was giving a briefing to the main comms. Really, no words could ever simply describe how you guys and girls knocked me off my feet. I had no idea how am I supposed to express my gratitude to everyone at that point of time.
I know it's a rather bad experience being it your first time helping out in one of the major projects. But hope you all had fun anyhow! WE DID IT BEFORE 4.30AM.
To everyone, including the main and sub comms! I know most of your bodies are aching now at one place or another, but I hope that through this experience, we are now more bonded and united as one applied science studies club! I'll TRY and promise this will be the first and last time you all will be doing such things! You know its so great to see everyone working together, though drenched in our own perspiration, having fun and working so hard at the same time! I'm sure you guys felt it too! So yup!
Everything greatly appreciated!
A big thank you to everyone involved once again!!
With lots of love,
- Kevin Zeph. Tan -

About Me:
Hi, I'm Kuan Hon (KH), the assistant secretary of ASC.I joined ASC as a Main Committee Member because I feel that without a CCA, my poly life would be so bland.
This would also give me something to do during the weekends instead of studying and playing computer games...
I firmly believe in teamwork and preserving friendships as friends are the people that bring fun to your life. I also believe that everyone has their own thinking and are thus unique.
In my free time, I like to cycle and play badminton, and occasionally volunteer at an animal shelter.I hope to make school more interesting for the students in TP ( I Hope).

Be it fun people, weirdos, jack-asses or plain, everyday, garden variety, I’m pleased to meet you! My philosophy in life is to imbue whatever knowledge I have unto others as well as serve for their benefit as well. A leader is a servant of his people.
I joined the ASC Main Committee to effect a change in the functioning, efficiency, relations and image of the club. It is in my belief when these factors are being balanced in synergy the club will be able to attract talent and flourish with a continuous flow of capable leaders.
I also believe that any skills that I have can be taught to future generations who will inherit the club’s legacy.

Student Training and Development Officer
Name: Howard Sim Yi Fan
Nick: Howdy
DOB: 02 July 1991
Course: Diploma in Chemical Enginnering
Year: 2
Email: howard.asc0910@gmail.com
About Me:
Heelllooos! Heeh, I'm Howard just called me Howdy by nick. Welllss I'm not born a pure singaporean as compared to most of you, as im born half a Taiwanese and Singaporean. Cool ya,Hybrid. Hahaha.
Welllsss life is getting interesting as months passed by as a main comm. I join as a main comm is maybe due to my determination in improving the student's development in school, in another words more like a student welfare thingy, knowing what the student lack of , train and develop them, that's why is called Student Training and Development! And also my promise to somebody, not saying who..Hmmm~
I like TP for a reason, well i don't like JC? Nah, just kidding. It's most probably i have no aim currently so going to JC isn't a very nice choice for me.
Wellss, talking about friendship, the 2 words TRUST and LOYAL seems to appear in my mind. Trusting one another is one of the most important role as a friend or whoever it is. Is only through Trust that you can work with somebody and what i meant by work is teamwork! YEA!! Being Loyal means being FAITHFUL to another. Cool huh?! Sure it does!!
I'm a social kind of person that goes up to strangers if there is a need to, not being shy. I do study and play at times. I play classical guitar and I'm just an average musician.
And i hope to meet pretty girls in ASC, WOOHOO!! My Ticoh-ness~ all the way!!
Nah just kidding, well im looking forward to people that i can cooperate with and able to think logically when situation and problem occurs. Yup yup THAT'S RIGHT~!
WooHooo! That's about it, for more information please feel free to call me and ohya im available at night, hehe sound so wrong here XD but I Like it!

On a pleasant note, like the others who wrote their biodata before me, i welcome our new blood into the studies club. With this, i shall end this with a quote.

Welfare Officer
Name: Dennis Loy
Nick: Dennis
DOB: 20 June 1991
Course: Diploma in Biomedical Science
Year: 2
Email: dennis.asc0910@gmail.com
About Me:
I am a very lazy and nerdy person because my hobbies include watching TV, going to the movies, eating, sleeping and reading Harry Potter and Dan Brown.
The reason I joined the ASC Main Committee is because I really needed a CCA and ASC is a CCA where i can give back to AS in my own little way.
My life in TP has been a great experience, first of all, because of the events the previous Main Comm had organized.
Secondly, because I was previously a Sub Committee Member and finally because of the great friends I have made in and out of ASC and AS.
